Calm before the storm

Posted by Scott at 06:43 AM

First major snow storm - While Chicago is already getting some snow today, it looks like southern New England is bracing itself for its first decent storm starting tomorrow. That line of precipitation that stretches from New York through Iowa will work its way east and mix with a cold front pressing down from Canada. In south central NH they're currently forecasting between 9 and 15 inches of snow. I get to christen the snowblower for the new season.

Work - It's been a bit of a stormy week at ARC as well. Early in the week there was some controversy because the health plan is anticipated to change in January to Anthem Blue Cross from our coverage provided by Blue Cross of California. It's worse than the current year's plan but Blue Cross of California isn't offering their same plan next year anyway. This motivated our San Jose HR to look around for something better and move to Anthem. Nashua is still looking at options in case there is anything better available locally.

The second storm at work was announced when I got in yesterday. Our CEO has stepped down and the board has put in place a COO and an interim CEO while they do an executive search for a new CEO. There was a small bit of controversy because the leadership presented a candidate vision for the company that Nashua wanted to "see the numbers" for. Luckily it's still early and the leadership appears open to feedback and dialog.

Prints - Yesterday I picked up a large order from Photographix. It included several individual portrait 5x7s of the kids, a bunch of 4x6s of the past several photo albums from October and November, our Christmas card pictures, and this 8x10 of the kids for my desk at work. It's a photo we did for my friends Stu and Paula. Before each child was born, Paula knit a blanket. That photo shows each child with their baby blanket. Send me an email if you want to print the (2MB) high resolution version.

Do-bees - The boys are just starting to wake up. Daniel just entered the room, extended his arm and showed me his toy airplane that he slept with. His first word of the day: "Airplane". Yes, Daniel, it's an airplane. You're such a do-bee! No "hello". No "hi papa". Just "airplane".

Hi Scott! Nice picture of you and the family. I just finished another one of my final research papers. Did you ever have to do a literature review? The first one I did was called 'The Effects of Media on Self-esteem in Adolescent and Adult Women' and the other I titled 'Victim Blaming in Sexual Assault: Characteristics of those who assign and those who receive blame'. They were both related to my thesis so they were kind of fun to do. One week left! I'm so excited! We put up a little 3 ft Christmas tree in our apartment. Tomorrow we are going to play some Christmas songs through the house and I'm going to buy some egg nog! Can you tell I miss being at our house for Christmas? The snow is just perfect out here. It was so nice to wake up and see it covering the trees out here. Well, I'm gonna get back to work. I'll try to post next friday :)

I didn't have to do too extensive a literature review at the time of my thesis. I was doing simulation modeling in VHDL of a serial SIMD graphics architecture we were building at Wright-Patterson AFB. There was at the time only one other place that had built serial SIMD graphics engines (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) and VHDL was only a few years old. So the intersection of the two was new and the individual aspects didn't have extensive backgrounds.

The snow has not arrived ... yet. But they're still predicting about a foot, give or take three inches. We had a bunch of snow squals on Tuesday that led to a bunch of accidents and delays even though the accumulations were minor.

I've been getting into the habit of having eggnog with coffee in lieu of cream and sugar. Well, at least I like it. Your mileage may vary...

Got to get back to work...

That picture would have been great for your Christmas card! All those blankies! How cozy!
We have no snow at all- Tom is decorating the porch with lights right now. Last night we went to the St. Nick's party at school/church- the kids had fun. This morning we went to the wake for Ray's son, Jim. He had two teenage daughters, so there were a lot of sad high school aged kids there- not fun. Soon I'll be going to the craft show in Rosemont with Mom and Bev, and then we are all going to dinner- it should be a good night, and so far, we don't even have to shovel! Suzy, sorry I missed your call- hope you are almost done with your work. I'm not jealous of you right now, having all that to do. Everyone take care, and remember,as William's bracelet from St. Nick says, Jesus is the reason for the season!
