Ewww! Gross!

If you don't want to know, don't read the rest...

While at my office desk, I got a call today from Michelle. She had sent Claire up the hill to check on the status of George's grave site. Claire didn't get all the way up when Michelle could tell something was wrong.

Wild animals had dug George up and ate him. When I came home, Michelle said I should at least go up and inspect the damages. I was reluctant because I had just settled in and wasn't ready to go out and deal with it. It was bad enough that I got stuck burying him, but at least he was intact. I had put it out of my mind and didn't want to re-open that chapter.

Being the way kids are, Claire, her friend Madison, and Abby led me up the hill. All that was left was fur and thin dry bones. I imagine between the land animals, birds, and insects, anything remotely fleshy was devoured. If I had known this was going to happen, I might taken different measures back then.

One might ask how we didn't know about this sooner. Because of the dry weather, we haven't mowed that corner of the yard. The lawn typically goes bare in that area if you mow it due to the poor, rocky soil in that section. Between not mowing and the girls being gone the last three weeks, no one had been up there to see this.

I'll take care of this soon, but ugh! Digging out a dead animal! I guess that's why they're called scavenger animals.

Who is George.?? I heard nothing of his demise.

It was mentioned a month ago. He was our cat after Shadow died. I'd estimate we got him in 1993. Some more details at:

Copy and paste the above address or look it up in the June 2004 monthly calendar. Don't forget that there's also a search function on many pages.
