Four Day Weekend

Posted by Scott at 06:19 AM

My small team at work has made great progress in getting our most recent graphics core development prototyped and up in the lab this past week. Since I'm a little bit less in the critical path now and the kids have a four day weekend for Columbus Day, I opted to take Friday and Monday off as vacation and enjoy this gorgeous New England autumn with them.

We don't have a ton planned. Today the Stove Keepers guy is supposed to stop by and diagnose why our primary wood stove won't light. I've checked everything that I know of. I suspect there's something wrong with the airflow. Either a seal is broken or a vent is clogged, but hopefully by this afternoon we'll figure it out. Something's changed since last spring when I cleaned it out for the season.

Also this weekend there's a bonfire/Octoberfest at some friends' house in Hudson. This weekend is Milford's Pumpkinfest. If we get really motivated, perhaps we'll even hit the local corn maze. I'm hoping to take some pictures of some of the local scenery. My commutes to and from work have been just awesome these past few days (neglecting traffic, of course). While we are very excited to see mom and dad in a couple of weeks, we wish that they could be here now to see things at their peak color.

So stay tuned. Hopefully I'll have an album up at the end of the weekend, and stories to tell.

Enjoy your weekend! St. Cyp's has a 4 day weekend too, but Tom is only off on Sunday. TJ has a 4 day weekend next weekend, to coincide with Guerin's canonization in Rome.
We don't have much planned- TJ is going to the homecoming parade and concert tonite, we are going to Cassidy's wolleyball game. Tomorrow Cass has softball practice, Tom works, and we'll go to RG's Fall Fest at night, Sunday Cass has 2 softball games in the am, a volleyball game at 2:30, and we also have our other nephew Michael's birthday party. Maybe we can relax on Monday.
Did you see Akeelah and the Bee yet? The boys are watching Curious George right now, for the 4th time, so I guess they like it. Maybe I'll go work on my photo albums since they are temporarily occupied!

Hi Lyss,

No, I haven't seen "Akeelah and the Bee" yet. Any useful commentary on it?

Our wood stove maintenance guy came today at 10:30am and didn't leave till around 1:30pm! I was concerned that within 5 minutes he'd say "oh, you've got a clogged such and such" or "you haven't been cleaning out the watchmacallit". We cleaned EVERYTHING out on the stove (it was quite an education!) and still it wouldn't start. We did a draft test and confirmed that the airflow was right. In the end one of my suspicions was true. The ignitor was not working sufficiently. Usually they either work fully or not at all. Ours was lighting enough to make the burn pot hot, but not enough to actually ignite the wood. Once he replaced the ignitor, the stove worked. He said he's never seen a partially working ignitor before. They're kind of like curling irons or blow dryers. They usually just burn out.

Alas, Michelle was happy that her favorite appliance was back up and running, even if it wasn't *that* cold out today.
