April Snow

Posted by Scott at 09:41 PM

What's that saying about April showers bringing May flowers? What does April snow bring?

Yes, just as the ground was finally ready to melt that last bit of snow in those heavy spots where plows and snowblowers throw it, it started snowing this afternoon and is still ongoing even now. Should I turn the snow banner back on?

I worked from home today, but not because of the storm. If I'm going to take a day off from commuting, I usually like to choose Tuesday or Thursday because they tend not to have conference calls. One of my customers asked me to call on Thursday instead of Wednesday, so I chose to work from home today.

The dual screen setup was nice. Even though the screens themselves aren't big, it still let me spread things out a bit more like I do at the office: ie. code in the left window, waveforms in the right. Near the end of the day I got word that 495 Northbound had near white out conditions and several accidents. It made me very relieved that I was already safe at home.

Being home on Wednesday had another nice benefit. I got to take one of Michelle's fitness classes instead of the ones I usually take down in Marlborough. Not that she doesn't already tell me what to do around the house... *smirk* I hadn't been to one of her classes in several months and enjoyed it as usual. Michelle is not a beginner's instructor.

Dakota Fanning in Charlotte's WebBecause of the worsening of the roads as the afternoon progressed, we opted to skip going out on a "date night" this evening. Instead she and I had simple meals and watched Dakota Fanning in Charlotte's Web with Claire and Abby. Man! There were a lot of big name voice overs in this heavy computer assisted film!

I did play a little bit of Tetris DS during the movie. We found this mode that really makes nice use of the touch screen and stylus. Called "Touch Mode" the Tetriminos are pre-stacked in a style that reminded me of the old game Jenga. You use the stylus to move and rotate the Tetriminos around to clear levels in a manner similar to Tetris. Unlike Tetris, though, they don't come falling at faster and faster rates. You have all the time you need. Touch Mode is more puzzle oriented, challenging you to drag the pieces left and right until they fall in such a manner as to clear the row. The Tetris DS website (all Flash based) has a movie showing it and the other modes of play.

I did finish The Dolorous Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ on Tuesday's commute. I think I'll make it an annual tradition during Lent, much like seeing The Nativity Story during Advent. It is that moving! On a side note, I may rent the Nativity DVD soon because Michelle never got to see it at the theater last Christmas. I didn't realize it was available now. If you didn't see it in the theater, watch the DVD, even if it does seem out of season.

Tomorrow is Holy Thursday and the Easter Triduum starts that evening. I didn't realize that technically Lent ends at the dusk of Holy Thursday once the Easter Triduum starts. Not that you give up your Lenten resolutions during the Triduum! I hope to attend our local Holy Thursday and Good Friday services, weather and schedule permitting. I've missed them the past couple of years.

Hey Scott-
We attended St. Cyprian's Tenebrae service tonight. It was very solemn and unique, the 8th graders ran it. Cass has to serve the next few nights, so we'll be at Church a lot!

Hi Alyssa,

I read at the Tenebrae services at Infant Jesus/Nashua for many years. I was always happy to volunteer for that liturgy. It was always quiet, solemn, and reverent. I think ours was always on Holy Thursday about an hour after the Holy Thursday Mass.

I went to bed thinking we wouldn't get much snow. When I was waking up this morning, Michelle broke the news to me. We had about six inches of heavy snow. I would need to snowblow it before going to work. It took about an hour to clear. I'm thinking that perhaps I should get a wider, more powerful snowblower for next season. This 11 year old, 6HP, 22in snow thrower doesn't seem to be up to the task any more. It's better than hand shoveling, but is getting bogged down more easily. I bought it when we had a small driveway.

Almost every school in the area is closed today, including Milford school district. As is common, Michelle has at least four kids coming over to play with our five. She's a crazy woman! ;-)
