Short Updates

Posted by Scott at 11:59 PM

Yawn! Good morning! Ready to start another work week? I'm trying to remind myself of what St. Josemaria called "the heroic moment" and get myself out of bed. 6:08am

Dropped all the kidlets off at their schools. Michelle and her sister are at the Y -- Michelle to teach her Step & abs class, her sister to use the cardio machines. I'm VPN'd into work for rest of the day, thinkin' perhaps I should bring my laptop downstairs near the fireplace for a while. ;-) 'Twas 27°F as I was running errands this morning. 9:08am

Cool! Amazon lets you track your delivery statuses with real time cellular text messages sent to you as it progresses. "Out for delivery, delivered or when there is a delivery exception." 9:57am

My copy of the DVD Not Evil Just Wrong came today. I placed the order 3 weeks ago. I wonder what took it so long. Looking forward to watching it soon. 1:57pm

Harry Reid? So if you oppose the current health care reform you are now akin to supporters of slavery? Really? Really? How many different ways can we play the race card? Pullease! 4:19pm

Back from a great Step & abs class. Really pushed myself. Offered the struggle up for Michelle's health. 7:14pm

Bookmarks I made today:

North Korea currency change sparks panic
Comment: Ah, that legendary "fairness" of Communism. As they transition to the new currency, only about $740 (US dollar equivalent) will be allowed to be converted. The rest of an individual's money will be worthless. This will wipe out savings. There's more than one way to wipe out a middle class...
Excerpt: Ordinary people are reported to be desperately trying to buy as many goods as they can with the old currency while it is still valid.

Intel's Larrabee Delayed Indefinitely- Google News
Comment: I can only imagine the sigh of relief coming over NVIDIA and AMD/ATI this week.
Excerpt: Intel axe Larrabee GPU over developmental delays. Intel Drops Larrabee GPU Plans. Intel's Larrabee GPU put on ice, more news to come in 2010

Please help the world - Copenhagen opening film
Comment: My goodness! This film is shameless propaganda. Dripping with young children, teddy bears, violent weather systems, and apocalyptic proclamations. A complete appeal to emotion and sentimentality.
Excerpt: "Please Help the World", film from the opening ceremony of the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2009 (COP15) in Copenhagen from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark. Shown on December 7, 2009 at COP15. ...

Why Apple's iPhone is Bad for Innovation | Online videos for busy business professionals | BNET Vide
Comment: This may seem like sour grapes coming from me, but it's a sentiment shared by a lot of developers. Still rootin' for the Android... or even WebOS phones.
Excerpt: Jonathan Zittrain, a professor at Harvard Law School, talks about the dangers of closed devices, such as the iPhone, which cannot be easily modified by anyone except their vendor.

Ramey Air Force Base - Wikipedia
Comment: Cool! Wikipedia has a decent article about my birthplace, an AFB that closed a few years after my birth. Little known fact: when I started active duty, my neighbor's wife (who was about my age) was also born there. Small world!
Excerpt: Ramey Air Force Base is a former United States Air Force base near Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. In addition to a small on-site Air Force detachment, and occasional operations by the Puerto Rico ANG.

Map of where we lived on base when we were first married...
Comment: Decided to use maps from Google and Bing to see my ol' USAF stomping grounds again. Surprise! They've been recently updated and now there's not typical base housing across the street from our old place. It looks like it was all torn down and some new stuff built in its place. I wonder what it is?

VMware wants dual-OS virtualized smartphones, no ugly boot-loaders -- Engadget
Comment: VMWare on a cell phone?! Years ago when I first heard about putting 3D graphic accelerators on cell phones, I thought that seemed absurd. Now... VMWare? The line between computers and cell phones gets ever more fuzzy...
Excerpt: It's getting harder and harder to pick a smartphone, with options like iPhone OS, WebOS, Android, and Windows Mobile making the choosing difficult. Life would be easier if you could pick two, and that's what virtualization giant VMware is working on, the ability to run dual OSes in one smartphone.

Watch "William Shatner's Full Interview Of Rush Limbaugh" Video at mediaite
Comment: Watched this interview over dinner. Regardless of what you think of his politics, his biography was interesting: skipping college, being a DJ, dealing with going deaf, overcoming addiction to pain killers, etc. And come on: William Shatner interviewing Rush Limbaugh. At first I thought it was a satire!
Excerpt: From Bio's Shatner's Raw Nerve: William Shatner's Full Interview Of Rush Limbaugh - 12/06/09

Rose-Hulman elects new college president
Comment: News for my friends who are fellow RHIT grads. For the first time in quite a while, he's also an alumnus.
Excerpt: Matt Branam has been elected president of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology by the college’s Board of Trustees. The election took place during a special board meeting in Indianapolis on December 4, 2009.

Netvibes
Comment: I hadn't used this service in a few years and decided to give it another look. I'm glad I did because it's much improved. Now with the explosion of social networking sites, it's a good way to keep an eye on Facebook, Twitter, email, news, etc. on one or more "widget" filled page(s).
Excerpt: Leading personal start page to manage your digital life. Add widget to read your newspapers, play games, watch TV, movies, listen to podcasts, manage your social networks like Facebook, MySpace, read your emails from gmail or yahoo mail.
