Short Updates

Posted by Scott at 09:00 PM

Good morning! Milford school district is closed today for weather. The kids will be thrilled. The grownups... less so. 4:54am

We dropped my car off for its snow tire swap. Bye glossy alloy rims. Welcome back to my cheap, ugly, black steel, "who care's about salt & sand" rims. There's ~3" of snow down so far and visibility is about a quarter of a mile. Have I mentioned how nearly impossible it is to start moving in a torque'y diesel in first gear when your all-seasons are balding. Luckily those tires are done. New all-seasons next spring! 8:08am

Enjoying O.J., hot coffee, fried eggs, pancakes, and a banana on this snowy morning! Yep, my awesome wife is a keeper! 8:10am

Took the snow blower out for its maiden voyage. We had about 6-7 inches of snow when I cleared it. It's still snowing but it's getting stickier as the temps warm up. Soon it'll be a mix or rain. 12:05am

Now that I've become the "expert" on Ericsson's new texture compressions formats, I've been asked to look over NVIDIA's proposal. They all look like such hacks to me. 1:26pm

Now that Facebook has done a bunch of updates to default privacy settings, I went back in to review and adjust them back to my liking. 1:47pm

Lovin' netvibes.com the more I use it. 2:25pm

Picked up my car from the mechanic. Unfortunately it had to be dug out from his lot. The snow was higher than the underbody shield. Enjoyed some take out pizza and calzones when we got home. Once home I cleaned out the mouth of the driveway where plows had re-filled it. 6:02pm

One last brief storm went through and is on its way towards Boston. I'm not used to seeing thunder and lightening in December. 6:50pm

Supposedly it's 37°F outside. If it can stay that way just a bit longer until the last bits of rain leave, perhaps we won't have freezing rain conditions (and possible power outages) tonight. Most NH'ites still have vivid memories of "Ice Storm '08". (related link) 6:53pm

Bookmarks I made today:

Inspiron Mini 10 and Mini 10v
Comment: Ordered Michelle a Dell Mini 10v. Yes, in red, like her cell phone. It's meant to be a convenient "kitchen netbook" for her to keep an eye on her email and news. My plan over the holiday break is to do the brain surgery to turn it into a Hackintosh Netbook. http://tinyurl.com/Dell10v-Hack But just in case I royally mess up, I ordered the optical drive so I can put Windows 7 back on it.
Excerpt: The new Inspiron Mini 10 & Mini 10v netbooks are everything you want in a mobile companion. Now with a multi-touch track pad and the next generation WiFi, all on a 10.1¨ display. Shop at dell.com.

A Skeptic's Guide to Copenhagen
Comment: I've now had my US Recommended Daily Allowance of snark: A dictionary of common climate change lingo.
Excerpt: As the global summit on climate change gets under way in Copenhagen, Tunku Varadarajan offers an eyebrow-raising A-Z guide to the proceedings.

Obama to GOP: 'Stop trying to frighten the American people'
Comment: Stop! I can only handle so much irony in one day!
Excerpt: President Barack Obama told House Republican leaders to "stop trying to frighten the American people" even as he and Democrats said they see a possibility for bipartisan cooperation on job creation legislation.

Mystery as spiral blue light display hovers above Norway
Comment: Wait a second... Let me get my tin foil hat for this one. ;-)
Excerpt: A mysterious light display appearing over Norway last night has left thousands of residents in the north of the country baffled. Witnesses from Trøndelag to Finnmark compared the amazing sight to anything from a Russian rocket to a meteor or a shock wave - although no one appears to have mentioned U...
