Short Updates

Posted by Scott at 11:23 PM

A belated good morning all! I dropped the girls off at school and head into Concord. Along the way I offered a rosary for Michelle and Claire and then listened to more "Cryptonomicon". Michelle is off teaching her 20/20/20 class. 9:56am

Please ignore this bit o' nerdy humor that brought a smile to my face: "Opening Microsoft Word has passed from a get-coffee operation to a grow-trees-roast-beans operation. Why is anyone surprised I use Emacs?" As seen on twitter at (related link) 2:22pm

"Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys." -PJ O'Rourke [Left or right, I agree!!] 3:12pm

Long but smooth commute home. Caught up with my folks during the first half, listened to "Cryptonomicon" for the rest. 6:53pm

Audible.com is having a one week 15% off sale for members. But most subscriber members just use "credits" where most books cost one credit. So how exactly does that sale save me anything? I'm confused. Is it 15% off if I buy something above and beyond my credits (ie. with money)? 8:59pm

Far too much geeking on a Tuesday night. If I'm going to get all the kids to school tomorrow, I've got to pull the plug and get some sleep. Good night all! Sleep well. 11:22pm

Bookmarks I made today:

The Nashoba Brook Bakery
Comment: A coworker discovered another lunch shop and took me there today. Awesome sandwiches and good soups. It's kind of tucked away so you have to look for it, but it's worth it. A bit crowded at lunch, so you might have to do takeout.
Excerpt: Every day we make our soups, salads and hot dishes from scratch with all natural ingredients. Our sandwiches are made with care and layered with premium cold cuts, fresh produce and homemade garnishes tucked between slices of our own hearth-baked bread. We know you notice the quality and care that ...

Women look beyond pill for birth control
Excerpt: “What I see in our communities is an absolute failure to move beyond the idea that hormonal birth control is the be-all and end-all,” Wershler said. “What’s happening is we’re not developing support programs and advocacy for women looking for non-hormonal methods.”

Apple, Qualcomm seen as winners of CES trends
Comment: Woot!
Excerpt: In the wake of the Consumer Electronics Show, analysts are upbeat on the outlook for consumer systems, especially those tied to emerging mobile devices and 3DTV, and singled out Apple and Qualcomm as two of the big winners from the trends at the show.

VirtualBox
Comment: I'd heard about this product before but thought it might be useful now if I want to kick the tires on this slew of "lightweight" OS's that have come out recently aimed at the growing netbook segment. Jolicloud, ChromiumOS, EasyPeasy, Ubuntu Netbook Remix, etc.
Excerpt: VirtualBox is a general-purpose full virtualizer for x86 hardware. Targeted at server, desktop and embedded use, it is now the only professional-quality virtualization solution that is also Open Source Software.

Jolicloud
Comment: Yay! I got Jolicloud running on a MacBook inside of VirtualBox. Picture to follow...
Excerpt: Jolicloud is a new operating system for netbooks. The OS provides a beautiful interface, an application directory and a set of social features that make it easy and fun to use.

Snapshots I took today:
