Short Updates

Posted by Scott at 11:32 PM

DC's storms are global warming. Vancouver's lack of snow is global warming. Are there any kind of weather events that would be inconsistent with man-made global warming? Just wondering... [Insert standard enviroleft rant about the difference between weather and climate]. 6:20am

Will the new airport scanners finally be the technology that wins the fight in the so-called "battle against obesity"? ;-}. 7:00am

Good morning all! I dropped the girls off at Milford Middle School and the twins off at Heron Pond Elementary. Michelle took Timothy to his school because she had a parent-teacher conference. Now she's at the gym while I log in and catch up on overnight office emails... 9:24am

"If you believe what you like in the gospels, and reject what you don't like, it's not the gospel you believe, but yourself." --St. Augustine [Hat tip: Kathy Schiffer, thanks Kathy!] 9:26am

My employer sent all employees a web link so that everyone could see their total compensation. It details things like the employer's contribution to medical care, life and disability insurance, FICA, 401(k), etc. I think more employers should do this so that people realize that they cost significantly more than the bottom line of their own paystub. 10:49am

Back from lunch with my former boss. He still works with me but was assigned a different role when we both started last July. 12:56am

While debugging, I'm listening to Chicago's WLS (again) and envying the descriptions of the Chicago auto show... 5:13pm

Michelle and the kids are at school enjoying a dance. 7:20pm

Partitioned the hard drive of my work laptop and put Linux on the second partition. I know, it's Friday night and the kids are in bed. Shouldn't I at least be reading a good book or somethin'... 10:30pm

Bookmarks I made today:

Oh Good Grief: 2011 VW Touareg Hybrid Is Less Efficient Than The Diesel - Touareg
Comment: I wonder what the sales figures will be for the Touareg Hybrid vs the Touareg TDI, considering the TDI actually gets better mileage. "But I get to proudly display my 'hybrid' badge..." ;-P
Excerpt: Plan for German world domination 2.0: Ze silly Yankees vill not buy our clean, efficient diesels. So! Ve vill give them what they vant! A less fuel-efficient 2011 VW Touareg Hybrid. Hail mindless consumerism!

Amazon Wants To Give A Free Kindle To All Amazon Prime Subscribers
Comment: As someone who has been an Amazon Prime member since the program was announced years ago, this would be cool! (Even cooler in that the Kindle's wireless is powered by Qualcomm 3G technology)
Excerpt: A reliable source tells us Amazon wants to give a free Kindle to every Amazon Prime subscriber.Just as soon as they can work out how to do it without losing money.

Weblog Entry from when I bought my car 4 years ago
Comment: Rejoice with me. Today we paid off my daily driver, my Jetta, my "Ruby". Some variant of Murphy's Law says that it will now either a) fall apart or b) get in a major accident.
Excerpt: Yesterday I traded in our 1998 Accord and bought a 2006 Jetta TDI in "Spice Red".

Hitler Rails Against Pope Benedict
Comment: Earlier I laughed when it was dubbed with news of the Massachusetts election of Scott Brown. Now it's dubbed with recent news of Pope Benedict. If you follow his pontificate, this is good stuff! I love the liturgical dance reference. ;-p
Excerpt: Hitler learns of Pope Benedict's popularity and blows his top. A quick way to learn about the issues in Benedict's pontificate.

Computer Engineer Barbie
Comment: If only I had given these a decade ago to my daughters... ;-} [PDF file]

Facebook Wants to Be Your One True Login
Comment: This story is too funny. Evidently enough people went to Google (or their browser search bar) and typed "Facebook login" and Google search sent them here because it was a story about Facebook Login services. Instead (read the comments) folks ranted about "hating the new Facebook" because they never noticed that they were NOT on Facebook. "when can we log in?" "please give me back the old facebook!"
Excerpt: Dear visitors from Google. This site is not Facebook. This is a website called ReadWriteWeb that reports on news about Facebook and other Internet services

Why Smart People Are Dumb
Comment: For me I always thought the more I learned, the more I realized I didn't know. The interviewed con artist said the smarter we are, or the smarter we think we are, the easier we are taken. "For me, the ideal audience would be Nobel Prize winners…their egos tell them they can't be fooled," he says. “No one is easier to fool."
