Short Updates

Posted by Scott at 11:59 PM

Good morning. Happy Cinco de Mayo. I dropped the girls off at middle school and am VPN'd into the office today. So far the morning is starting out nice: 53°F and sunny and getting into the mid 70's later. 7:51am

Congrats to my cousin Beth Bilik Genengels and her husband Chad. Beth gave birth to her second, another boy named Brennan Edward Genengels. 9:51am

It's a two-fer day for Michelle today. On one side she'll get a dose of the monoclonal antibody Herceptin. On the other she'll get zapped at radiation oncology. "If it's not one thing... it's two things!" 10:45am

Back from lunch downtown and my first of many iced coffees of the season. It's 73°F and sunny outside. I wish mirasol displays were more readily available now, 'cause I'd love to be able to take my laptop outside while debugging. 2:00pm

Thinking of starting a new Apple rumor: the iPhone Shuffle. This tiny phone has no screen and randomly calls your contact list for you. It can use speech synthesis to tell you who it is blindly calling so you aren't as surprised. It also uses that advanced "Leet" speech synthesis to "read u ur txt msgs". Don't worry about its tiny size -- just use a Bluetooth headset, like the iTooth, for calls. 6:46pm

Around 8 o'clock logged out from work and went downstairs to fold whites with The Mrs. while we watched season 3 episode 4 of "Chuck" with our girls. 9:11pm

Bookmarks I made today:

If Mario Was Designed in 2010
Comment: Using the Google cached version of his page because his site is getting hammered with requests.

Intel reaches for the 'smartphone zone' with Moorestown-based Atom Z6, comes up shorthanded
Comment: Looking over Intel's new specs, I'm not worried that they'll intrude into smart phones soon. It does bode well for even more power efficient x86 netbooks though.
Excerpt: Three years after the chipmaker told us Moorestown would reduce Atom's energy consumption by a factor of 20, company execs told us earlier today that they've more than reached that goal[...]. Problem is, in the smartphone realm Intel's competitors haven't been sitting idle.

IBD/TIPP Poll: 60% Favor New Arizona Immigration Law
Comment: This must annoy the chattering classes... Much like the health care reform opposition.
Excerpt: Editorial pages may rage against the Arizona immigration law, but a solid majority of Americans support it. The responses show a public increasingly frustrated with the response by local, state and federal authorities...

Major Facebook security hole lets you view your friends’ live chats
Comment: Major oops!
Excerpt: Today I was tipped off that there is a major security flaw in the social networking site that, with just a few mouse clicks, enables any user to view the live chats of their ‘friends’. Unbelievable I thought, until I just tested the exploit for myself.

Strong thunderstorm causes power outages for thousands
Comment: This is what hit us yesterday as I was leaving the office yesterday. It goes on to say: Almost 2,000 PSNH customers were without power in Milford and for a time during the afternoon and evening, the town’s traffic lights were blinking because of the outages.

Lean, Strong and Healthy with Susan Powter
Comment: Today someone told Michelle that she reminded them of a brunette Susan Powter. We had to look up who she was because our memory was a bit fuzzy...

Nintendo - Picross 3D
Comment: My sons Daniel and Timothy are big fans of Picross. I wonder if they'll like this new variant of the popular Nintendo DS game.
Excerpt: Check out the official website for Picross 3D on the Nintendo DS system. Get ready for a new dimension of brainteasers, with 365+ mind-bending puzzles!

Ellen's iPhone Commercial
Comment: On yesterday's episode of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," Ellen explained to viewers that she had been contacted by worried brass at Apple HQ. "They thought that I made it look like the iPhone was hard to use," she explained. And then quickly – with a dash of humor – she retracted her criticism of the iPhone. "It's not hard to use," she said. "I love it. I love my iPad. I love my iPod. I love IHOP."
