Short Updates

Posted by Scott at 11:59 PM

Yawn! Good morning! Today looks like it'll be a lot nicer outside than yesterday. The rain has gone. We'll see sunshine and temps in the lower 80s. I'll be working from home because I have a routine dentist appointment later today. 5:29am

So now there's talk of bailing out union pensions. Do our leaders even know what Moral Hazard means? 6:26am

Dropped the girls off at middle school. Lucky daughter Abby is going to a NH Fischer Cats (related link) baseball game today for a class field trip. The boys got on the bus. Michelle will be biking to the gym to attend a Step class. I'll be home debugging some broken fixed point logic. 7:58am

Back from a good dentist appointment. 40+ years and no cavities. Meanwhile my wife has the naturally straight teeth. How will the kids' teeth turn out? I have the feeling some poor child is going to end up with my crooked teeth and their mother's propensity for cavities. 11:52am

A Google guy just announced all the developers attending Google I/O conference are getting an HTC EVO. That's huge! That's in addition to a Moto Droid that they are already giving away to developers. 12:21am

Back from a late lunch downtown. It is gorgeous outside today. Abby's class has the perfect day to see the Fischercats baseball game. Hope she isn't sunburn. 1:59pm

I didn't expect "Anna Karenina" to end with atheist Levin finding faith, but I was happy to find it does. Since Levin is a parallel to Tolstoy, I'm guessing it reflects Tolstoy's own faith journey. 2:23pm

Back from a good Step class. Tonight is another middle school concert, this time Claire and the choir. I'm going to spare the boys tonight and stay home with them while Michelle & Abby go to cheer on Claire. 6:53pm

I got the boys to bed after they watched about half of Disney's "Bolt". The girls have all just returned from the choir recital. I'm going to look into what my next audio book should be since I'm just a few short chapters from the end of "Anna Karenina". 8:37pm

Wow! You go to audible.com and for authors like Austen, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, etc. you have analysis paralysis trying to figure out which edition to buy, download, and listen to. But the Tolkien "Lord of the Rings" series? Nothin'! Only some short dramatized version. How is that possible? Really! 8:55pm

MESSAGE TO CARDINAL: Shut Up, They Explained
Comment: This man did not give his opinion. He reiterated official Catholic teaching. That's his vocation. And yet high political figures in Canada could not tolerate it. This is what happens when political correctness creeps too far into intolerance. [via Jimmy Akin]
Excerpt: For years now, this newspaper [has] been warning Canadians that the trend toward liberal dogmatism among much of Canada’s political class is serving to muzzle religious Christians who are doing nothing else than giving voice to their cherished beliefs. The appalling reaction to Cardinal Ouellet’s sp...

Laconia vacation house rental - New Listing: Large, quiet, beautiful waterfront family retreat near
Comment: My old boss just bought a property on Lake Winnipesaukee with the idea of renting it out. 3100 sq ft with 6 bedrooms and sleeps 12. It's really intended for 2 or even 3 families to split. At the daily/weekly rates, you almost need to.
Excerpt: Wonderful family retreat in a beautiful and spacious home with 100’ of water frontage on a quiet cove off Paugus Bay (part of Lake Winnipesaukee), perfect for kayaking or canoeing! Property is nicely landscaped ...

DROID by Motorola for Verizon Wireless
Comment: Holy cow! Free for new subscribers, $20 for Verizon upgraders?! If that doesn't get the market share of the Android phone platform moving, nothing will. Alas I'm a Sprint guy and don't feel compelled to move providers. Besides the HTC EVO 4G phone (another killer Android phone) comes out on Sprint in a couple of weeks.

The Joy of Tech comic... Too cool for the Internet.
Comment: So what you're really saying is that your mom joined all of your social networks.
Excerpt: "How come you're not online lately?" "I'm thinking I'm too cool for the internet these days."
