Autumn

Posted by Scott at 09:54 AM

Fall - My favorite time of year is starting. Cool, brisk mornings, gorgeous trees (especially the maples), and most bugs are dying. In some years past we've heard forecasters say the colors might be muted because of the dry summer. They can't say that this year! Welcome autumn! Here's hoping for some bright colors...

Webnotes - Last night I put a new feature online: webnotes. The links are at the right hand side of the front page. Think of them as a web version of yellow sticky notes. You can put any old text in them, color them, resize them, move them, delete them. Leave messages for yourself or others. Each person has their own workspace but there is no logins/passwords. Keep it clean! This is a family website after all. If you know a little bit of html, you can even do fancier things like put links and pictures in the note. Just be sure to click the disk icon to save the workspace when you're done.

Last night I had it working on my browser at home but it wasn't until I got into work that I could test drive (and fix it) for Windows browsers. The only thing I have yet to fix is a feature you probably won't use. That little orange "xml" button on the workspaces is currently broken because I'm missing a code library. I'll use that feature soon to track the workspaces for changes and updates. I'd also like to update the sidebar list to have an indicator next to the name to show if any new messages were added on the current day.

Milk - Over the past several months I've had a lot of minor stomach problems. At first I thought it was a stomach bug, but those don't last more than a week, two at worst. Then I thought it was some of the not-so-good-for-you foods I sometimes eat. Then I thought perhaps it was my daily coffee making a nervous stomach. In the end I think I've figured it out: lactose intolerance. Sounds lame, I know, but I guess it's pretty common in adults. I bought lactase pills and a carton of lactaid milk and things have been much more stable for the past week.

Comments

I tried the webnotes and I was getting a save error, just an FYI

Let me know if you can repeat the error. It could have been a temporary database outage. Unlike most of the site, the pages there are all dynamically generated so if the database is having problems, the script can't save. Most saves should take just a second or two, even faster than posting a comment. I can test saves out on a PC tomorrow, but things seemed fine this morning with a quick test.

Does it happen just on that computer? If so, is it running current versions of browsers? (IE, Mozilla/Firefox, Netscape, etc) A lot of the code requires a decent Javascript engine on the browser.

Lastly, can you see the notes I put there already?

I reviewed the server logs and tweaked a security setting. I'd bet saving works now. Certain browsers don't send a referrer string when saving. I was filtering on lack of referrers to try to avoid abuse by hackers. Anyway, try it now.
