Feeling trendy?

Every once in a while I find a site that makes very dynamic use of Java or Javascript. Months ago I found a Java based page that explains US Zip codes incrementally in real time as you type the digits. Google Maps makes excellent use of Javascript.

Today I got a link for The Baby Name Wizard. It's a Java based web application that incrementally shows you the relative popularity of baby names over the 20th century. Type in Stanley, Edward, or Margaret and see the drop off after the early 1900's. Type in Donna, Linda, or Deborah and see a mid 50's peak. Then type in the current trendy kid names like Madison, Emily, or Aidan.

Sometimes it's best to just type the first few letters to see variations of the same name. As you hover your cursor around you get relative rankings of the name over the decades. If you have a choice of matching names, clicking on one selects just that name.

It's a load of fun. My wife and daughters played with it for at least an hour. The girls liked comparing names of their friends. Michelle liked to think of new baby names.

Scott,

Are you trying to tell us something, with the baby name site?

Nah, it's just fun to watch how names come and go almost like fashion -- especially girl names.

Other than that, nothing implied about near term fertility - your family or mine. :-)
