Short Updates

Smooth commute but a bit muggy. The usual prayers followed by listening to my current audio book. (related link) 8:49am

The interesting thing about working in the Handheld division is just how OCD we are about power minimization techniques. 10:05am

[Duct tape over mouth] Mummble...mmm...mummble. (related link) [/Duct tape over mouth] 10:54am

While there's virtually no ATT 3G in NH, Sprint's mobile broadband has decent coverage, even at my house. Sprint/Samsung Instinct? Hmm... 11:09am

Happy 60th Birthday Raffi! (Parents know who I'm talking about. We've a couple of his kid CDs) (related link) 11:16am

Back from lunch with my spiritual director. On the way back stopped by the Sprint Store to see the Instinct. It's a pretty nice smartphone. 1:56pm

Dictionary.com's word of the day: troglodyte. Claire, whose bedroom is in our basement, should love that word. (related link) 2:11pm

Back home again. I'm always amazed at my Jetta's ability to go from Marlborough, MA to Milford, NH (~48 mi) on 4/5th of a gallon. 6:34pm

Checked out hulu.com's online video service. I wish the Adobe Flash video codec was as optimized as the Apple QuickTime codec. 9:03pm

In my lack of computer/technology knowledge, most of this post made no sense to me, I did, however, know who Raffi was.

I (currently) work in the Handheld graphics arena (as opposed to desktop computer graphics or game console graphics). With that mindset we have a borderline Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) about reducing power in our design approaches. Since everything runs on small batteries, we go crazy trying to reduce power.

The mumble mumble was pointing to a rumor tech article about something we're working on but I can't comment on the rumor's validity.

Re: ATT 3G. Everyone's hyping the new iPhone that comes out this week, the iPhone 3G. It has faster speeds because it leverages ATT's new third generation (3G) wireless cellular data network. Unfortunately that network is non-existent in New Hampshire, so all this hype about a new iPhone is pointless to me. However, you may have seen ads for the new Sprint phone, the Instinct. It's very much an iPhone wannabe. And Sprint does have high speed data networks in New Hampshire and at my house. Hence, if I want something sexy like an iPhone, Apple/ATT is not offering me what Sprint is.

Hulu.com is like a Youtube.com video service, except it's oriented towards commercial video not user generated (home grown) video. So last night Claire watched the pilot episode of Charlie's Angels (back in the 1970's).

Hulu does everything in Flash video format (like youtube and other sites). The makers of Flash video format have software that lets me play their video on my iBook but it sucks down a lot of my laptop's performance. So much so that I can't play hi-definition video, only lower quality video. Meanwhile that same laptop can play Apple QuickTime format hi-definition video without too much issue. The difference is that Adobe (makers of Flash) haven't optimized the software as much as Apple did so that it can run on 3 year old hardware.

I think that about covers it. Some days are just boring. Today is looking to be another one...
