Short Updates

Posted by Scott at 11:59 PM

Good morning! My wife has such a sense of humor. She was taking off her compression sleeve and remarked that if it only had a glove on the end, she'd feel like a stripper. Prayer, exercise, humor, and attitude -- it's the only way to get through this B.S. of cancer. 5:58am

Timothy finally got that second front tooth out. It was hanging by a thread last night but just would not release. He lost the first one about a week or two ago. So now he's got a huge gap in his smile. Queue that classic Christmas song. "All I want for Christmas is..." 6:19am

Got the girls dropped off. Caught up on news from the (mid-)western home front with my dad while Michelle & her sister dropped off the boys. Now they're heading out shopping while I'm VPN'd into work for the day. Beautiful clear skies and 38°F, that'll dry off those streets and driveways! 9:36am

Just off a long conference call. Once again, I'm getting preempted from my main development work to handle a "forest fire" for the next week or so... When managers make Microsoft Project files, do those waterfall diagrams really ever hold water? Time to get up and get some exercise... 5:07pm

Back from a good Step Circuit class at Golds. Now to investigate some dash board warning lights stuck on in Michelle's van. It's always somethin'. 7:19pm

Bookmarks I made today:

The Victoria's Secret Catalog Never Stops Coming: and Other Lessons I Learned from Breast Cancer
Comment: A fun little book Michelle's sister bought for her. http://amazon.com/dp/0452283663/

Comment: Picked up this freebie from iTunes. Backed up/sync'd to my MacBook. A decent selection. Hat tip to Fr. Roderick for the pointer.

Motorola Droid - The Top 10 Everything of 2009 - TIME
Comment: As ranked by Time Magazine (not exactly a tech journal, but...) At #1: the Motorola/Verizon Droid! Edging out the iPhone 3GS (which ranked #4). Me, I'm just happy that the market is getting competitive again: Blackberries, Droids, Palm, iPhones.
Excerpt: Everybody likes Android, Google's open-source smartphone operating system. But a smartphone operating system isn't all that satisfying without an actual kick-ass smartphone wrapped around it. Now...

9 inches of snow revive memories, slow commuters
Comment: A good summary of yesterday's snow storm... the first real one of the season. We're all thankful it wasn't like the one a year ago this week. That took out a lot of southern NH's electricity for days and weeks.
Excerpt: An old friend returned after an eight-month hiatus. Snow revisited New Hampshire on Wednesday, and it brought its bag of usual tricks. It slickened roads just in time for the morning commute and gave students their first weather-related cancellation of the school year.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1
Comment: Was strongly tempted by the capabilities of this small camera (one of the few to use the new micro-four thirds standard) but then saw the price... $900. Ouch! You'd think I was buying a Leica! Please Panasonic, cut that in half and we'll talk.
