Short Updates

Posted by Scott at 09:15 PM

Good morning! Time for me to stop dawdling and get the family to Mass. Happy St. Valentine's Day everyone! 6:18am

Back from Mass & breakfast. I had Michael read me a couple chapters of Huckleberry Finn. (abridged). 9:30am

Been experimenting with FriendFeed again. I will say this: compared to Facebook it's a lot more open with its API and feeds. 1:36pm

MacBook ran out of battery power. Booted work laptop in Linux and surfed over to work on taxes. TurboTax gave a warning about the browser, but so far Firefox over Linux is still working fine. Two things I hate at tax time:accounting for stock grants, and state income apportionment. 3:58pm

While Claire went ice skating, I took the rest of the family for St. Valentines day dinner at Amigos Mexican restaurant, rose included. 5:55pm

Watched the season one finale of "Chuck" with the family. 6:57pm

Bookmarks I made today:

Excerpt: The latest issue of People magazine features a cover story about the famously large Duggar Family along with a chilling question: “How Many Kids Are Too Many?”

Why Linux Mint Might Be a Better Beginner's Linux Than Ubuntu
Comment: When I partitioned my hard drive to put a linux variant on it, I chose Mint. I like that it ships with drivers for your hardware ready to go. Once you install it, you can focus on what applications you want to install and not "hey, why isn't my wireless, audio, etc. working?"
Excerpt: On nearly any post about Ubuntu, or Linux in general, the Ubuntu derivative Linux Mint is offered as an alternative, or comes up (multiple times) as a recommendation in the comments. What sets Mint apart? Blogger (and obvious Linux lover) Jeff Hoogland makes five cases for Mint over Ubuntu. ...

OpenOffice.org 3.2 New Features
Comment: Open Office version 3.2 was released this week. Since I had installed Open Office on Claire's laptop, I figure I ought to download it on my MacBook in case she has any questions for me about it. Installing now...

YouTube Safety Mode Demo
Comment: Recommended for avoiding NSFW situations and for those households with kidlets...
Excerpt: How to opt in to Safety Mode and how it works.

Adobe promises faster Flash on Macs
Comment: Oh please, let this not be a vapor promise. In my informal Flash benchmarking its performance on Macs should be an embarrassment to Adobe.
Excerpt: "In Flash Player 10.1 we are moving to Core Animation, which will further reduce CPU usage and, we believe, will get us to the point where Mac will be faster than Windows for graphics rendering... Video rendering is an area we are focusing more attention on"
