Eco Hype

Posted by Scott at 11:59 PM

Good morning! I dawdled a bit but eventually head out to work. No need to do any school dropoffs. I listened to LotR (Chapter 2) on the drive down. When I got here, the electrician was re-wiring my lights with a switch. The sensor mechanism was too unreliable, often shutting off my lights as I sat relatively still in coding/debugging sessions. 9:11am

Congrats to HP on really innovating in the All-in-One workstation market. See the new HP Z1 workstation. 9:38am

<vent>If it takes 15-30 seconds to load a single weblog entry on high speed broadband, you're doing it wrong.</vent> There, I said it. It's one of my pet peeves when moving from entry to entry makes you feel like you're back on a dialup modem. Broadband is supposed to make things load faster. You needn't overload your site with so many plugins and bits of bling that it overcompensates for the extra speed. Of course I'm very biased as my site loads in about a second. 10:03am

While I love Ford, they are going a bit marketing hype with their "Ecoboost" engines. These engines combine turbo charging with direct injection. Do folks know what the "TDI" in Volkswagen's TDI line of engines mean? Turbocharged Direct Injection. Most VW TDI's (like mine) also feature an intercooler to further boost the turbo's efficacy. They just don't have Ford's marketing department coming up with clever names like "Ecoboost". 10:32am

Those WSJ writers and their techno pun'ish headlines: “TomTom Warns of Rough Road”. My friend Craig Cottingham had an even better headline: “TomTom on quarterly earnings: ‘Recalculating…’ ” 3:08pm

Michael Moore boasted that his friends were planning on voting for Rick Santorum (in Operation Hilarity). Wait. Michael Moore has friends? Perhaps the news media is missing the real headline. I know, it's hardly a charitable thing to say. It just seems that everything that he says is loaded with venom. 4:20pm

Way back in ancient times when I was in grad school studying parallel processing on multi-CPU workstations, we used to love to play with rendering fractals. So it was with a sense of deja vu that I'm seeing it happen in massive parallel hardware in our GPU. (read more and see pretty pictures) 5:27pm

Didn't leave work until after 6:30. Caught up on news with my dad the entire drive north. Had a reheated dinner when I got home and watched a bit of Family Matters with the kids. Told Michelle and Abby about "Urkel" and "Laura Ingalls" being on the upcoming "Dancing with the Stars" which inspired them to look up the rest of the cast. 9:17pm

Got the boys tucked in bed with their prayers. Now just waiting for Claire's ‘bring me home’ call and hoping it isn't as late as last night's was. 9:18pm

Picked up Claire at quarter to ten. I am wiped out! Good night all! 10:15pm
