Is low-fat really the way to go?

A lot of bloggers on the internet have been remarking about this story in the NYT magazine section (registration required... blah blah...) entitled “What if It's All Been a Big Fat Lie?”. It's long but readable. I read it this morning while waiting for our van's state inspection. The article critically examines the belief that high carb, low fat diets are the way to weight loss. It turns out that this dogma of nutrition has only been around for the past few decades. Dr. Atkins has long been bashed for being critical of this low fat mindset but more medical professionals are starting to believe that the high carb, low fat mindset is oversimplified and has unintentional side effects which can lead to weight gain and other health risks. The counter viewpoint is that meals higher in fat and protein tend to satiate you more easily so that you feel less hungry and eat less often. Overall I think it's a very interesting read if you can print it out and set some time aside.

I also read this short article by Greg Popcak entitled “Making time for marriage without a lot of money”. I have a couple of Greg's books and it's probably time to crack them open again now that little Bilik number five is on the way.

As I said above, I got the second of our vehicles inspected today. Tomorrow was the deadline. The downside of closing on the new home so close to my birthday was that I had to renew the registration and inspection on both vehicles and this year my driver's license was up for renewal. So if moving and unpacking wasn't enough, there were plenty of automobile/driving issues to deal with as well. I didn't want to do registration, inspection, and license renewal with the old address but couldn't do them until we closed on the new house. Finally it's all over. Now onto mortgage re-amortization...
