I'm amazed anything works

Posted by Scott at 09:08 PM

About a week ago we got our second replacement TiVo. This TiVo works fine. I shipped the original TiVo and its first replacement back a few days ago. Within a few days the working TiVo automatically updated itself to version 4.0 of its software -- the latest version.

I was looking forward to getting a little time to try out the new networking abilities that 4.0 enables. Tonight Michelle took the girls to WalMart so after the boys went to bed I dug out the recommended network adaptor and tried to hook it up. Emphasis on tried. After several attempts the TiVo failed to recognize the adaptor. At first I thought perhaps the TiVo was having yet another technical glitch, but when I plugged the adaptor into the Mac, the Mac didn't detect it. So perhaps it is the adaptor and not the TiVo that's failing. The advantage I have is that if I bring the adaptor to work, I can put it on a USB bus analyzer and see if it's really dead.

Since my day job is consumed in analyzing and debugging logic, I've often commented that I'm amazed that anything electronic works on a mass consumer level. Recent experiences have confirmed that pessimistic outlook.

Yesterday I went in search of the book version of "Cheaper by the Dozen". At first I went to Mori Books on Amherst Street which specializes in used books. They only had a rare first print edition -- for $95. Whoa! I just wanted to read the book, not have it as a collector's item! I later found that the book is still in print and picked up a copy from Milford's ToadStool Bookshops. I also picked up a copy of the sequel, "Belles on Their Toes". I've read a bit of them and so far am enjoying them.

I also worked on importing my very oldest webpage entries into this weblogging software. The monthly archives now go all the way back to December 2000. Blury eyes! Must get back to sleee....

Hello-
I'm typing while holding a baby, so excuse any errors.
Today is Andy's last day of school. What am I gonna do all summer?
Anyway, I'm writing to tell you that in 6th grade, I think, my whole class read Cheaper by the Dozen. It's one of the 1st "real" books I remember ever reading, not that I remember much about it.Does Michelle like to read? I'd like to find something good to read- I enjoy reading while feeding Kyle- it keeps me awake.
Have a good weekend!
Alyssa

What are you going to do all summer? I guess it's the same struggle Michelle will have. Parks, pools, send them outside. It's tough keeping them busy and out of boredom! I'm just hoping the mosquitos and black flies tame down out here. You should have seen the bug bites on the twins' ears yesterday! It was the one place on them that Michelle didn't spray with repellant.

I'm enjoying "Cheaper by the Dozen". I suppose I could see sixth graders reading it. Would you like me to send it with Claire so that TJ could read it this summer?

Michelle does like to read but I think by the time she gets all the kids down to bed, she just wants to relax for a moment and then get some rest. I can't blame her. I do enjoy reading when I can. If it wasn't ovious, I also enjoy writing. I'm hoping that my writing becomes better with practice. Writing is an important part of my day job.
