How there became a Christmas

An original story by Claire.

A long time ago there was a little boy that lived in a little town. This little boy's name was Nicholas. He soon grew to be a man.

Now one day he met a young lady named Helen. He became good friends with Helen. One day he asked to marry her and she said "Yes!" They got married. The question was where would they live?

They looked and looked all around. They finally found some land. Maybe they could make a home to live in. It's still seemed like a lot of work. They asked people all around to help build the house, but none of them had any time.

Now they were sad and started to take a walk in the woods. They stopped because they heard something rustling in the woods. They decided to go a few steps closer. To their surprise they saw elves hard at work. They decided to meet them.

"Hello," said Nicholas. One elf turned around and said, "hello" with a squeaky voice. Then all the elves turned around and said, "hello!" "Hello," said Helen. "Maybe they could help us build our house," Helen whispered to Nicholas.

"Would you like to help us build our house?" asked Nicholas. "Oh, yes," the elves said. "Well then, come with us," said Helen. "We will show you the way."

Now when they got to the land they wanted to build on, they started immediately. It took them three months until they finished the house.

Helen and Nicholas asked if they wanted to live with them and the elves said, "Yes!" Now each year the elves made furniture for their home. Nicholas thought harder and harder. He thought that his town was so poor that maybe he could ask the elves to make some toys to give away.

He asked the elves if they could make some toys for the children. The elves said, "Yes!" Now the question was what could he ride. Nicholas asked the elves if they could make a sleigh. The elves said, "Yes!"

The elves made a sleigh and toys and last but not least, got eight reindeer. Then Nicholas got a brown bag and put all the toys in it. The next day, he left to deliver them.

Soon other kids started hearing about it and Nicholas wanted to come to their houses. Now Nicholas comes to everyone's house in the world on Christmas.

Great story, Claire! I can't believe you are only in 3rd grade! Maybe one day you will have a book published! Uncle Tom likes to write stories too, but they are always about time travel or outerspace. I liked your Christmas story. Did you have to write it for school, or did you write it for fun?

Great story Claire, keep it up.

P.S. Want to team up on a time travel or outerspace story?

In a small way she did have it published. She originally wrote it for a class assignment. Her teacher enjoyed it enough to type it up with one paragraph at the bottom of each page. Claire then drew pictures for the remaining white space. I guess I could now take it to Kinkos so that they could bind it. (Then Dan Rather could use it as further evidence of Bush's lack of National Guard service...) I typed it for this online version this afternoon as Claire dictated it to me. She's always impressed at the rate grownups can type!
