Weather - Welcome to December. Man! Is it dark in the morning these days. The sunrise these days is about 7am or later here in Milford (and in River Grove). Meanwhile we hear the first early morning rumblings from the boys' room around quarter to six. We've had a lot of clouds and rain lately, but at least it's been warm. The Thanksgiving day snow is all gone.
USAF - As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I tendered my resignation as a commissioned officer in the Air Force. Two days ago I received my "suitable for framing" honorable discharge certificate. I know I've been inactive for eleven years, but it seemed to be like closing a novel you've just finished. It's done. It's over now. It's all behind me.
Aerobics - As is common for me on Wednesdays, I took Michelle's lunchtime step aerobics class. She teaches one of the more exhausting classes. I can't prove it but I think her music tempo is about 5-10 beats per minute higher than most other instructors. To paraphrase Spinal Tap, her classes “go to eleven.” As if your heart doesn't approach maximum beats per minute, she often combines a few rounds of muscle toning exercises. In the end you leave not certain you know how to walk anymore and thinking perhaps it'd be best to just burn what you were wearing because it might not clean up in the clothes washer. ;-)
Chauffeur'ing - Yesterday was a bit of chaos. Michelle and Abby had one last meeting to go to in preparation for Abby's First Reconciliation (aka confession). Before anyone asks, we still don't know the date of Abby's First Communion. At roughly the same time, Claire had a piano lesson. I left work a bit on the early side so that I could take Claire and the boys in the van to drop Claire off while Michlle and Abby took the car to St. Patricks. Their reconciliation meeting ran longer than they anticipated so I put the boys back in the van to pick Claire up. This time I actually brought the boys into the piano teacher's house. I figured she should meet this 'band of brothers' that Claire and Abby have mentioned numerous times in their lessons.
Resume - I spent about an hour working on my resume yesterday. I'd told myself I wouldn't put it out until December. In my limited understanding, November tends to be a slow hiring month as companies are finishing up their year, but if you start looking in December you might have a chance of landing something at the beginning of the new year. By then companies have a 'fresh set of books' as they've closed their finances for the previous calendar year. Whether this is true or not, I don't know for sure. But as an office that no longer owns any valuable intellectual property of its own, it doesn't take long to see the handwriting.
CCD - Tonight Michelle teaches CCD and the older four attend their classes. I'm not sure what mighty Timbo and I will do tonight. I was thinking of taking him to Haywards Trading Post to shop for something to buy Michelle for Christmas. They had lots of nice 'cozy' things that I think she would like.
why are you giving out new resumes??
Posted by: Suzy at December 1, 2005 01:05 PMI'm curious as to why you had to resign as an officer? That doesn't just happen when you leave the service? It sounds like a good reason to have a party at the least. Next time you're in Airforce Retirement party at the Loon!

Posted by: Tom at December 1, 2005 01:32 PMHi Tom,
Ahh, there's the hidden secret. When I left the USAF, I was officially categorized as "inactive reserve" for several years. So yes, if there had been some critical shortage of AF officers who can do digital design (as often as THAT happens), they _could_ have reactivated me as active duty. The odds were pretty low, but it always existed. Now I have the "honorable discharge". If I understood things correctly, I was going to be out anyway, but they wanted to give me the opportunity to "resign my commission". I'm not sure it means a hill of beans, but either way, I'm out.
Hi Suzy,
I guess word hasn't really gotten back to you via mom, dad, or Alyssa. Take a peek at this brief post from last month:

and give someone a call. In short, this company bought our assets but not the site. (ie. the people)
There's only so much I can write about work.
Posted by: Scott at December 1, 2005 03:11 PMHi Scott,
havent visited you family site in a while so I thought I would today.
I was surprised to see you making up a new resume. Hope things work out for you in your job hunt. All the best for the holidays.

Hi Mike,
Yep, making a resume. I hadn't made one in many years. How does one summarize in just a handful of bullets what one has worked on for the past ten years or so? Worse yet, there are different types of roles I'd be comfortable with for the future so it's hard to have the balanced bullets that could appeal to employers in all those roles.
Anyways, Merry Christmas Mike. Take care.
