Belated Father's Day update

Posted by Scott at 01:14 PM

Saturday - Saturday was rather busy for the first half. We knew that Sunday was going to be (to speak in the local style) "wicked hot". With that in mind we wanted to get the lawn taken care of as early as possible. I got things setup after breakfast but had to wait a bit for the morning dew to dry off. In the interim the girls and I watched the new Pink Panther with Steve Martin. Between 10am and 11:30 I hustled to get the bulk of the lawn done. From there I showered up and had an appointment for a haircut. Straight from the haircut I had to pick up the girls from gymnastics, drop Abby off at home, and go with Claire to the piano recital.

I made one major mistake that morning. Because Michelle knew I might be a bit tired from the morning's events, she bought us Dunkin' Donuts iced coffees. Note to self: in the future, do not drink large amounts of caffeine before performing on the piano. I already had a bit of natural jitters, but an iced coffee only made things worse. While I knew my part of the duet, my hands were a bit shakier at the keyboard than they were last year. Luckily, once we performed, my main duties for the day were over. We wrapped up the day with hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill.

Sunday - Sunday started with the usual fanfare: 7am Mass followed by taking the family out for donuts. From there we head to the YMCA. Michelle took the kids swimming while I hauled my lazy behind for some aerobics. On the way back we took the kids to Target because I'd heard a rumor…

Mario Mix DDROnce inside Target I head over to the video game section. Sure enough, it was true. Nintendo had re-released Mario Mix Dance Dance Revolution (aka DDR). It had been released last year … I think in the autumn timeframe. When I saw it last year I made a mental note to buy it for the kids for Christmas. Suddenly Nintendo stopped shipping it. The only boxes you could buy were from second hand sellers who marked up the price to ~$200. Sigh… just when I thought I had the perfect game to fight the New England winter cabin fever.

Once we got home I set it up for the kids and Michelle let me take a nap at the same time as Timothy. Afterwards we were invited down the street to a pool party. Perfect timing. It was sweltering hot outside and the kids loved it. Fearless Mighty Timbo enjoyed jumping in from the edge for me to catch him. All I could think of is the scene in Finding Nemo where Crush the turtle tells Marlin the clown fish, "You have serious thrill issues dude! Awesome!"

We stayed until dinner time. Kids could swim all night if you let them. Once home we ordered some Italian take out and the kids conked out. Michelle and I weren't far behind. I don't mind being tired, if it's a good tired. Certainly, this Father's Day was.

"Lazy Behind"? You're all at Mass by 7AM and then later head over to aerobics? We always attend a 9:30 Mass because even though we are up at the crack of dawn, we still can't seem to get out of the house before that. Goodness knows we've tried... Oh, and happy belated Father's Day!
