http://www.ieee.org/
It's the professional organization related to Electrical Engineering. I've been a member for most of my professional life after leaving the USAF. It's not like a teachers union, per se. But most standards related to gadgets have origins in the IEEE. For instance, wireless networking (aka WiFi) is sometimes referred to as 802.11 by techie's. 802.11 is the IEEE standards number referring to the official standard of protocol for doing wireless networking so that things interoperate and work together. When I did VHDL work in the USAF, VHDL was an IEEE standard.
It has a few services for members like insurance, social networking events, technical seminars, a boatload of technical journals on all sorts of niches, technical courses, etc. Michelle and I have maintained term life insurance through them because it's affordable and gives a continuity regardless of whether my employer offers it. And overall it just looks good on a resume.
The cha-ching comment is that membership was $170 for the upcoming year. That always bothers Michelle (for obvious frugality reasons).
