On today's commute I'm going to start on Raymond Arroyo's biography of Mother Angelica. Whoa! 10 CD's! (related link) 6:26am

Today in "Spirit Week" is Twin Day. Claire and her good friend Shannon (who already looks like her sister) are dressed identically. 8:58am

Smooth, sunny commute. Listened to Raymond Arroyo's moving description of Mother Angelica's difficult childhood. (related link) 9:00am

I have to say, I would question Daniel staying in 1st grade if he can read Charlotte's Web, that is at least a 4th grade reading level...
I'll try again to talk to my principal about parents' rights when it comes to retention...
Have you or Michelle ever been to their classrooms to observe how they seem in school? Do they seem behind? Are other kids mostly above, below or the same?
It's a tough call, I've never had a parent who wanted a child retained. Your boys are lucky you care so much and want to help them. I wish I could tell you what would be best for them, but I think you have to go with what you feel, and consider what the school is saying too. Good luck! and goodnight!

We're also concerned about what happens if we only hold Michael back and let Daniel move forward. I don't know if there's much experience on that.

Working through Charlotte's Web is slow with my help on difficult words. Daniel considers each chapter a real challenge, but he likes the challenge of reading a real "big person" book. This is not his usual level of a reader.

Scott,

It's "Funny" as in 'strange' that you're having trouble keeping the twins back when I have a friend who can't seem to get her school to understand that her daughter needs to be passed. (She's also in 1st)

Poor kid is a little lagging in reading- but made major progress this year, (Non reader to reader, etc) mom is getting her a tutor this summer- she's not struggling in anything else- and the school thinks she should stay back because her reading level is about 4 months behind....Thing is- I've heard this girl read and wouldn't even recommend her for retention.

Also- this little one's self-esteem would really suffer if held back. I told mom that they can always send her back to 1st for extra reading help if needed next year. Will just wait and see how it ends up.

Strange how different two situations can be huh? And how different teachers see things differently.
