I got the pattern right away- must be an elementary ed. thing- did you ask the boys?

The thing that sent me on the wrong path for a little while was that 7 == 3+4, and 19 == 7+12. So it was starting to look a lot like a Fibonacci style pattern. But 12 is not 7+4! And yes, once I looked at the trend in differences between two adjacent numbers, I quickly caught the pattern. Perhaps if I'd looked at the other examples on the page, it might have hit me sooner. Claire gave me just this one because she was stuck on it and when she told me the kinds of things she was thinking, I just kept going down the wrong paths. I needed to think "it's just 7th grade math." and stop trying to complicate it more than it was.
