Short Updates

Posted by Scott at 09:16 PM

Good morning! The kids are all in school. It's a beautiful autumn day here in southern NH. It's the kind of color that autumn in New England is famous for. Sadly it only lasts a couple of weeks before it fades. Which reminds me, I should schedule a time to get my snowblower delivered... 8:58am

Just back from Golds where I took a Step class with Michelle. She was eager to get out and get some exercise. Now back to work for the rest of the day... 10:30am

The kids are all home now and trying out their Halloween costumes. Michelle got some of 'em today when she went out to buy some new tops for her Amazonian self. 3:30pm

At the eye doctor again. This time the visits are for Claire and me. 4:51pm

Happy to be back home. My eyes are fine and my prescription hasn't changed. Going to be wearing sunglasses for a few hours while I enjoy the evening in this cloudy, eye-dilated world. 5:54pm

Good night all! 9:16pm

Toro Power Max 1128 OXE
Comment: Just called the Engine House in Milford. My snow throwin' beast gets delivered tomorrow. 11HP, dual stage, 28" cut. *grunt* http://www.toro.com/home/snowthrowers/gastwostage/1128oxe.html

A new climate-modeling supercomputer will use the processors now found in cellphones and other porta
Comment: Went out to grab the postal mail and the latest IEEE Spectrum arrived. It had this interesting story on the front cover. Because cell phone processors have such great compute *per Watt*, the authors discuss building a huge climate modeling supercomputer using cell phone like CPUs. http://www.spectrum.ieee.org/computing/embedded-systems/lowpower-supercomputers

Qualcomm's Mirasol Ultra Low Power Display Is Almost Magic
Comment: It's funny how they mention this kind of tech could eclipse the Amazon Kindle e-book reader. What they don't realize is that Qualcomm makes chips that go into the Kindle too. If I wanted a Kindle, I get a "company discount" on it. http://gizmodo.com/5377250/qualcomms-mirasol-ultra-low-power-display-is-almost-magic
Excerpt: Ebook readers suffer because they use E-Ink, which isn't in color and doesn't refresh fast enough to do video. Qualcomm is quietly showing off its Mirasol display, now in full color with 30-frame-per-second video. See for yourself:
