First Day Back

Posted by Scott at 11:59 PM

Good morning! Time to face reality again. Back to verification/debug work for me. Back to school for the boys. Michelle teaches her Step class. It was nice having the free time with Michelle and the boys, but long term it can't pay the mortgage. 6:07am

Smooth drive down to Boxborough. Lots o' sunshine which helps Monday morning feel a little better. IT has come in and done the last bits to get my new desktop computer log-in-able. There had been a corporate networking/domain mix-up so my computer wouldn't join the QC network. This morning will be some email catchup and installation/setup of the tools and environment on the desktop PC. 9:45am

New year and time to update my Massachusetts M-4 tax withholdings form. Insert standard joke about taxation without representation here. 10:43am

While IT installed Outlook, Office, and Visual Studio, I have a bunch of other things to setup: Chrome, ActiveState Perl, Cygwin, CMake, Perforce, Emacs... Just to name a few. 11:17am

As I surfed over to an Emacs download mirror, I noticed that "big, bloated" Emacs was 2.8 megabytes back in version 18. Those were the early 90's when I first started using it in grad school at WSU. Now it's up to 44.7 megabytes in the current version 23. Considering back then a typical workstation had 8 or 16 megabytes of RAM and now typically have 2-8 GIGAbytes of RAM, I'd say Emacs has gotten lightweight, relatively speaking. :-] 12:19am

It's been a busy evening. Left work a touch early so that I could catch most of the Step circuit class at Golds. Went straight from Golds to the Manchester airport to pick up Claire 'n Abby. The timing was about perfect. I was just in the middle of eating a bagel I had purchased at the airport when they came through security. The three of us had a nice drive home with them telling me all about their adventures this past week. 8:25pm

The girls got their brothers tucked into bed with their prayers. I've done some catchup and started preparing for this week's RCIA class. Good night all! 9:50pm
