Short Updates

Posted by Scott at 11:59 PM

Good morning! It's a chilly 11°F here in the Souhegan Valley. Today is the Feast of Presentation of the Lord. I'm headin' down to the Concord office today. Midday we're taking off and heading to F1 Boston! (related link) It should be an awesome break from staring at C++ code. 5:58am

Smooth, sunny commute into Concord. Offered a Rosary for the health of my mom, wife, and oldest daughter. Listened to a podcast from FrMitch Pacwa for the rest of the trip. Listen here: (related link) 9:35am

Arrived at F1 Boston and signed the waivers. 12:05am

Driving back to the office from F1 Boston. Very cool experience! 1:47pm

On the way back from F1 Boston, we had a late lunch/early dinner at P. F. Chang's China Bistro. That wrapped up our team building boondoggle. Tomorrow it's back to writing tests. Had a smooth drive home listening to a podcast and a little XM radio. 6:24pm

Curious thing I noticed. When I run the CPU monitor and watch a YouTube video (I'm catching up on a few subscriptions), it uses significantly more resources than if I watch the same video at quietube.com. I wonder why? A different video format perhaps? 7:23pm

Bookmarks I made today:

Bill Watterson, creator of beloved 'Calvin and Hobbes' comic strip looks back with no regrets
Comment: A comic strip I still love a decade and a half after its last publication! Now that 3 of my kids are little boys, it's all the more relevant.
Excerpt: This marks the 15th year since "Calvin and Hobbes" said goodbye to the comics pages.

New Morning After Pill Sells Abortion as Contraception
Comment: Written by fellow Catholic and Granite State'r, Danielle Bean.
Excerpt: There’s a new “Morning After” pill in town. It has a futuristic name—ellaOne—and if we ladies are lucky enough, it will be approved as over the counter “emergency contraception” that can be used for up to five days after unprotected sex. Only problem is, it’s not contraception at all.

Thomas Sowell : Politicians in Wonderland
Comment: Thomas Sowell scores another great op/ed.
Excerpt: The big question that seldom-- if ever-- gets asked in the mainstream media is whether these are a *NET* increase in jobs. So long as most people do not look beyond superficial appearances, politicians can get away with playing Santa Claus on all sorts of issues, while leaving havoc in their wake-- ...

President Obama visits Nashua
Comment: I was so excited to go cart racing, I forgot El Presidente was visiting in nearby Nashua, NH today...
Excerpt: Pool photo coverage of President Obama's trip to Nashua, NH Feb 02, 2010.

Funny Huggies Commercial
Comment: We were just watching a little television when we saw this commercial. It had Michelle breakin' out laughing! We'd never seen this one before, even though it's a year old.
Excerpt: This baby pees like a fire engine hose squirts.

Chumby
Comment: About a year ago when I was hacking with the Chumby http://chumby.com/ I was thinking, "if only I had a linux box handy for C++ cross-compiling, I could do some serious work...". Today I recalled that I have linux distributions running in virtualization (via VirtualBox), so now I'm downloading the needed tools to try again. (or I could use Claire's laptop, but I'd better not go there!)
Excerpt: The chumby is a compact wi-fi device that displays useful and entertaining information from the web. It can also be used as an Internet radio player, digital picture frame and alarm clock.

Scratchbox
Comment: Looked at this tonight for compiling into embedded systems.
Excerpt: Scratchbox is a cross-compilation toolkit designed to make embedded Linux application development easier. It also provides a full set of tools to integrate and cross-compile an entire Linux distribution. To find out what it can do, take a look at some of the documentation.
