Preparing to Move

Posted by Scott at 09:26 PM

Good morning! Today is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. I dropped the girls off at their schools. I'm working from home today. 8:19am

Went with Michelle to the 9:15 Step It Up class taught by Kathy. It was a little more advanced in choreography than I'm used to in the evening Step classes, but I enjoyed it. Die hard aerobi-mommies at those morning classes! Now back to work. 10:32am

Saw a web ad describing the TiVo Premiere Elite as "the 800 pound gorilla of entertainment" with the ability to record 1000 hours of entertainment. Not to mention the four hi-def tuners built in to avoid scheduling conflicts. It was a bumpy transition for us to go digital, but this box has been a great upgrade for us so far. Such a monster DVR in such a diminutive black box! I only miss the built in DVD player/recorder of our old TiVo. 12:00am

Took Michelle for lunch at Cafe on the Oval and for coffees at DFE afterwards. 1:15pm

Our graphics team is moving into newly leased space (same building, different wing) in a couple of weeks. Just got a call to pick my office. I'm happy that my new space is a lot closer to the system architects. Handy when you want to ask, “and just how did you intend for this work?” 2:03pm

As seen on Google+: “It took Obama’s Administration to get 100% of the US Bishops to agree. Even the Pope can’t do that!!” <smirk /> 2:56pm

For all the brouhaha about "Komen for the Cure", only about 20-25% of the net proceeds (after extremely heavy administration overhead) goes to research for a cure. Much of the rest goes for other admittedly useful women's health programs like cancer treatments, breast screenings, but I tend to think "for the Cure" is a bit of a misnomer. If you want to look for causes and real cures regarding breast cancer, there are better foundations for that. Late last summer I was happy to help my sister raise funds for such a foundation. 3:35pm

Rarely have I been excited to see Windows8 boot. Today is an exception. Windows On ARM! 4:08pm

While Planned Parenthood is gloating about an increase in donations since Komen pulled out, Komen's CEO Nancy Brinker speaks: donations “up by 100 percent over the past two days.” (related link) Even with a hacked website! Yup, think of all those times conservatives hack the websites of causes they disagree with. 5:50pm

Via @NickAlexCath: “What… is your name? Trump. What… is your quest? To seek the grail. Who… do you endorse for the presidency? Newt. I mean, Romney. Aii!!” (Monty Python reference) 6:01pm

Obama was at the national Prayer Breakfast? The event and day that he has shunned in the past? Hm. Must be an election year. 7:04pm

Overheard on Phineas and Ferb: “I'm a woman of science. At least that's what my horoscope said…” There were a bunch of other great lines in that movie, but that one stuck out to me. 8:44pm

Got to the root of several testing failures this afternoon. Finished work around 7 o'clock. Relaxed with the Kindle and watched a bit of Phineas and Ferb with the kidlets. On the Kindle I've been seeing how Readability compares to ReadItLater. Both let me postpone articles I come across during the day to later when I actually have the time to relax and read them. Both have support for iOS and Android (including the Kindle Fire). Got the boys tucked in bed with their prayers. The girls are still downstairs watching the latest The Middle. Good night all! 9:26pm

“Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother,
‘Behold, this child is destined
for the fall and rise of many in Israel,
and to be a sign that will be contradicted’ ”
