Short Updates

Posted by Scott at 10:13 PM

Good morning! Ready to start another work week? Up here in the Souhegan Valley it's already 33°F and the rain downpour that's been moving across the country will hit here in a few hours. With all of the snow still covering the ground, there is some concern about flash flooding because of poor drainage. 5:53am

Back from dropping the kids off at their schools and running errands. Michelle is out teaching her Step class. I'm VPN'd into work for the day. 9:27am

UPS guy just stopped by. Three packages and all of 'em were for Michael and Daniel. They'll be so excited when they get home from school! 10:12am

Stopping work. Holy cow! It's 51F outside. I knew we were getting a warm spell, but I wasn't expecting a heat wave. 7:31pm

Said prayers with the boys and tucked 'em into bed. Now enjoying some warm chocolate cake fresh from the oven, watching another season one episode of "Chuck" with the girls, and refreshing my brain on Amazon EC2 usage. 8:28pm

Gettin' tired and ready for bed. Spent a little time setting up for Amazon EC2 experimentation. It's come a way since I last kicked the tires with it about a year ago. It's an intriguing idea from decades ago that is coming back: renting time on your own server by the hour. Whereas decades ago it was expensive, now it ranges from 9¢ to $2.40/hour depending on how horsepower much you need. 9:44pm

Audio Update for Jan 25th
Comment: Short updates and random ramblings for January 25th, 2010.

Richard Stallman on The Setup
Comment: I was surprised to find this out. I would've guessed that Mr. Free Software™ would be hyper-connected. Instead he only connects to the internet a few times per day and he uses a pretty wimpy laptop too.
Excerpt: "Most of the time I do not have an Internet connection. Once or twice or maybe three times a day I connect and transfer mail in and out."

Jakob Nielsen on The Setup
Comment: Jakob is a web usability expert but when I read the quote below, all I could think of was "whoa... ouch!" He doesn't have an iPhone because he needs "to make phone calls". He also says "I continue to find Photoshop unintuitive, though it has made me more productive to downgrade from the full edition to the more limited Elements edition. A good example of the less is more usability maxim." I agree and often prefer Photoshop Elements.
Excerpt: "Mobile: An ailing Palm phone and iPod Touch. Yes, it's silly to carry two devices, and I don't always bring both, but I can't get an iPhone with the current network, because I need to make phone calls."

Catholic chuckles
Comment: Thank you Fr.John Trigilio Jr. for the laughs...
